The tab that follows each of my list bullets and numbers has a gray background.

I cannot find a way to get rid of them either in the Lists pallette or any other style tool.

Any ideas?

Open Preferences - Appearance and check Hide this highlighting for Automatic Text > List items.

That did it! Thanks. Where this happens to me is in text that has been pasted from websites.
