I'm having trouble printing a 370-page document. When I attempt to print (or print preview/save as pdf) random page breaks seem to occur. This means that my 370 page document suddenly becomes a 386-page document.
If I go to the first place in the document where the page breaks occur after printing and then delete all the text in the general area and the type it in again, all the other page breaks disappear and my document returns to its 370-page state. ... Until I try to print again. (Actually, they don't seem to be page breaks but whatever is happening has the same effect.)
Not sure what to do and starting to panic as the document has to be submitted by Dec 1. I've been using NWP despite opposition from colleagues and publisher. I've been consistently reassuring them that there'll be 'no problem' so I could end up looking very foolish if I'm not able to submit because of 'technical difficulties'.

Have you checked if the apparently spurious page-breaks are the result of having "Keep together" or "Keep with next" set in the paragraph style of the last paragraphs where the break occurs? What about "Widows and orphans" setting? If you're using footnotes, they can interact with these settings to cause early page-breaks.

Thanks. 'Keep together' and 'keep with next' are both unchecked but 'prevent widow/orphan' is checked. Would it be worth unchecking this to see what happens?

There are footnotes. However, there are no footnotes in the section where the first spurious page brake occurs. Does that suggest footnotes are not a likely cause?

I don't know. Those were guesses based on my own experience. And I just mentioned footnotes, 'cos they effectively shorten the amount of space available on the page for the main text, so can cause such a page-break for a long paragraph.

The widows and orphans might do this; if you have a long paragraph which go over a page-break by only one line or two, whatever your setting is for widows and orphans, Nisus will shove the whole paragraph onto the next page, so that could be it.

Try turning off Widows and Orphans for the paragraph style in the affected areas and if that's the problem, it should redraw to give you normal length pages. If it doesn't solve it you can turn it back on, but you'll have to look for a solution elsewhere.

Perhaps Martin or someone else infinitely more knowledgeable than me will come along with better suggestions.

Great guesswork! It works fine now. It wasn't obvious by looking at the 'printed' pages because there didn't seem to be a pattern at all. And I still don't understand why fixing the first blank page would cause all the others to correct themselves.
Anyway, no time to worry about all of that now. Thanks a lot for your help. You've saved me a great deal of stress and embarrassment.
