Suddenly cannot insert image (1.4.2 and 2.0.2 demo)

In NWP 1.4.2 I yesterday saved an .rtf file. Today, thinking I may have to upgrade to 2.0, I downloaded 2.0 and installed it (I still have 1.4.2 on my machine with a different name). Then I opened the file 2.0.2. I cannot insert an image. The option is grayed (greyed?) out and Cmd-Shift-I just gives me the "that-didn't-work" beep. So I closed 2.0.2 and tried 1.4.2 again. Same thing. Any idea what I did?
