This involves two companies,so I'm trying both.

Back in early days of Nisus Writer, I also used Thunder 7.

If I'd write without having abbreviations expanded then, for instance on another device, I could tell it to do the expanding, and it would rapidly make all the changes.

Now, with new versions of both, Nisus Writer Pro and Spell Catcher, I can't have the expansions all made automatically. It will ask about each unique one, and I can tell it to change all occurrences of that one. But for a document that many different abbreviations, that can take some time.

Is there a way around that?

To clarify, when you talk about expanding abbreviations, are you referring to Nisus Writer's glossary or QuickFix feature (which expands as you type), or something SpellCatcher does interactively? It sounds like it's the latter, in which case you'll want to contact the makers of SpellCatcher about the performance issues you're having. If they determine it's not a problem with SpellCatcher itself, and instead the slowness is due to some quirk of Nisus Writer Pro, please let us know and we'd be happy to communicate with them to see what we can do to help.
