Any way to get keyboard control of cross-ref highlighting?

Hi,
What I'd like is the ability to quickly turn the cross-reference highlighting on and off with a command key, so I can check quickly if I've remembered to add a particular cross-reference. (I have a lot of cross-references, so I leave the highlighting off because it's distracting when I'm editing.)
I know I can do this by going to preferences -> appearance -> etc. But I find that too cumbersome for quick checking. Menu Keys, however, don't appear to list the highlighting cross-reference (or any highlighting) from the preferences.
Any way around this? If not, could these be added in future to the optional command key structure?
Thanks
