Thanks for the replies about how to change distance between footnotes. Is there an easy way to increase the distance between the line that separates the text from the footnotes so that the first footnote isn't so close to the line separator? Thanks!

If you look down the bottom of the stylesheet info for footnotes, you'll see "Gutter height"; that is the space between the bottom of the main text and the first footnote. I have that set to 12 points, but you may set it to what you want. I think the default is much too narrow.
Then in the box below, there is a choice of "Top", "Center" or "Bottom" for where the divider line goes within that gutter. If you set it to "Top", it will be near the foot of the main text, with most of the gutter between it and the footnote. I have it set to "Center".
Play around with both those until you find a spacing that suits you.
