Internal Links or Hyperlinks?

I'm still using NWP 1.4.2 ... didn't think I needed the upgrade until I began writing ebooks, now I'm waiting to upgrade for the next upgrade sale.
I'm looking for a way to create internal hyperlinks within my document (an ebook).
Bookmarks and cross references don't seem to work, because I can't figure out how to turn them into clickable links. A ToC doesn't work either, as each link is part of a short paragraph. Here's an example:
<clickable link>Header Text<end link>
one sentence about what's in the main section.
.
.
.
<bookmark or ???>Main Section Name
the main section goes here.
Is there any way to set this up?
I've been writing my books in NWP, then transferring them to LibreOffice for formatting. I'd far, far rather use NWP for the entire job.
