Why can't I remove highlighting?

I've faced this several times, and I'm sure what's happening makes sense to someone – just not me. I have a paragraph style that includes highlighting and other formatting. Often when an entire paragraph is highlighted, when I go up to the "Highlight" button, the "Remove Highlight Attribute" is grayed out so I cannot select it. Why is this?

The reason for this is a little esoteric, but it comes down to the way attributes/formatting are combined. Your text doesn't have a highlighting attribute applied directly, so there's nothing to remove. The highlighting is enforced via your paragraph style, so you either need to remove that style, or simply apply a white highlight to override the style.

I hope that helps clarify things.

I tried
"... apply a white highlight to override the style."

It does not work.

Using Nisus Writer Express 4.4 for M3 Mac
Sonoma 14.6

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

What exactly happens when you select the text and apply a white highlight?

You say you have v4.4. Try to update to v4.4.1 and see if that makes any difference. In v.4.4.1 macOS Sonoma compatibility issues were fixed.
