quotation mark causes text following to move to next line

Three quarters of the way into a line, if I type a quotation mark (") followed by a parenthesis, the last word quoted and remaining words on the line, even if well within the margin, automatically are displaced to the next line. Example: ". . . found his way." (Findings at 8). The word "way" and "Findings at 8" and everything after is moved to the next line. I haven't been able to figure out any way around this. Any ideas? Driving me crazy. Thanks.

Yes, seems very strange, but I can confirm this. I found that if I inserted a thin space after the quote, it would break.

HI -

strange SPACE indeed - after a quotation mark SPACE mis-behaves like FIGURE SPACE, as no-break character!
In TextEdit as well…

The short answer is that this is behaving correctly, at least according to the system text engine, which Nisus Writer Pro (NWP) uses. The wrapping rules are determined by Apple and the Unicode Consortium. You might see this thread for more discussion on the matter. As the topic says, you can insert the special character Zero-Width Non-Joiner (or other spacing marks) to override the text engine behavior.

HI -

some logic just does not fit - is fooling us.
I listed alternative SPACES you can use to work around…
