When I type the quote mark followed by a vowel Nisus gives an umlaut on the vowel. It didn't used to do that. How can I turn this "feature" off so that I can just get a quote mark followed by the vowel I want?

It seems you are using 'U.S. International - PC' keyboard layout.
You can disable it by selecting it in System Preferences>Keyboard>Input Sources and pressing the minus sign at the bottom left of the pane:

Then use the plus sign to add the keyboard layout of your choice if it is not already in the list of available keyboard layouts.
Also, in NWP Preferences>Languages, set your chosen keyboard.
