We’re all familiar with macros on a conceptual level. We know that the directive: “Clean up your room!” means to perform a number of smaller tasks (“routines”), often with “sub-routines”:
Clean up Your room
Perform the following tasks in order.
1. Pick books up from floor
2. Put books on shelves
3. Pick clothes up from floor
They may be clean or dirty, Each situation requires a different response. First we evaluate them, then either continue or do a different task (i.e. another item in the task list).
a. If (the clothes are dirty) then
i. Put clothes in laundry.
b. Else (otherwise),
i. Hang up clothes
4. Collect dirty cups and dishes.
