Link to a File

You can link to other files that reside on your Mac. The process is very similar to that described in the section “Link to a location on the Internet”:

1. Select the text you want to link (ie: the text where the link will be applied).

2. Choose the menu Insert > Hyperlink > Add Link to File….

A standard Mac file selection dialog appears.

3. Select the file you want the link to open.

4. Click the Insert Hyperlink button.

The link is applied to the selected text.

⚠️ Although file links can be useful in personal documents, be careful about using them in documents that will be shared or exported. Usually a file link will not remain accessible elsewhere because the target file does not exist! Even if you also share the targeted file, it will almost certainly not reside in exactly the same location, and thus the link will be broken.

Link to a dragged file

Instead of adding a link through a Nisus Writer menu command, you can instead add a link by dragging a file from the Finder:

1. Find the file in the Finder (or other app).

2. Start dragging the file’s icon.

3. While the drag is underway and the mouse is still down, press and hold the Control key.

The mouse cursor changes to show a curled arrow, to indicate a link action.

4. Drop the file in a Nisus Writer document text editing area.

The file’s name is inserted as text and an appropriate link is applied.
