At this time there's no way to insert the word count into the document. You'll just have to copy the information shown in the Statistics palette manually and update it as need, sorry.

Seems this is now a feature in NWP 1.3.1 (not sure when it appeared). I was wondering if another couple options could be added.

1) Word count - X (where X is some number the user could enter... kind of like a formula)
I'm often writing papers where I don't want certain things (like Title page) included in the word count. I often start with a template, so it would be easy for me to put the initial word count (before I've added anything) into that formula as X, and then start working. This way I'd maintain an accurate word count of the 'body' of the document.

2) Word Count including Footnotes would be handy at times as well.

Thanks,

Hello, and thanks for the tip. I already use these, and there are MANY handy actions there... especially for FREE. :)

However, I'm looking for something 'live' like the way the current word-count stats work, only including a bit more flexibility.

Steve - that's Ok - I just knew about it from someone a few years ago. Knew it had a word total aspect in there.

Yea, it is pretty neat set of tools. I use the 'Reformat' tool all the time to clean up stuff copied from web pages, etc.

It is called WordService 2.7 (here is a more direct link):
