Minor new features

Post by greenmorpher »

What about a slightly thicker (maybe 30%?) bar at the foot of the window?

What about a button there for show/hide invisibles?

I don't used the toolbar at the top, but I quite like the few things available in the bar at the foot, and feel it is the right place for show/hide invisibles.

Cheers, Geoff

Personally, I would like the window's frame to be kept as clean as possible. The beauty of the standard Mac toolbar is that you can quicky show/hide it with a shortcut or the dedicated button. Another beautiful thing is that you can easily customize it, something seems harder to do with the lower frame.

But I guess the Show/Hide Invisible icon could go next to the zoom icon. Only, is it a really often needed command, so often to find place in this "toolbox"? And wouldn't a shortcut applied to the menu command even quicker to use?

Personally I find the top toolbar too big and clunky, Paolo. I don't use it in anything where I can avoid it. I don't use the "show invisibles" that often either -- just often enough to want it in plain sight. I do have a shortcut set -- command-i-i -- but for some reason, no doubt totally illogical -- this is one action for which a button seems right!

I suppose the bottom bar alongside and zoom and stuff seems comfortable to me because I use zoom moderately often and when I am working, I tend to "park" the cursor down towards the bottom right.

I have never used the Style menus parked down there, as I have most of my Styles set up with keyboard shortcuts and interacting, and when I need to manually change styles, it is generally some sort of global thing using "Select all of Style" then switching to a new Style from the Format menu.

So there you are! Idiosyncratic work styles!

Cheers, Geoff

Just to double check, but are you using it with icons only, and smaller size? This way (as I use it) it is just double the size of the lower margin - including the document's title.
I have never used the Style menus parked down there
While I don't use them for selecting styles (as you, I prefer to use shortcuts for this, but I understand that they are handy sometimes), I admit I use them to re-define a style, or select everything with the current style. It seems quicker than going to the main menu or the palette.

I don't have the top toolbar showing at all. I have the Tooldrawer open all the time and have it set up for what I want.

For me, the Toollbar is just a waste of space. There is nothing in it that I do frequently that I don't prefer ekyboard shortcuts for. For example -- Print. command-p in every program. Why would I want to click on a button? Arrows back and forward. That's what the keyboard arrows are for. Change language? I never change language. Tables? I use a couple of tables fairly frequently, but I rearly make up a table. Change list styles? I have the Tooldrawer with the list styles open -- but nearly all my changes of that stuff are parts of Paragraph Styles. Turn off the ruler? NEVER!!! And so on.

My individual way of working.

I do use such things with graphics programs, however. But this is a writing or editing program and my hands are over the keyboard all the time.

Cheers, Geoff

I love how Nisus Writer lets everybody choose his/her own way. Go figure: I keep the drawer close all the time, after setting the document! :-)

While I also keep the toolbar close most of the time, it is handy for quick access to some tools, I don't want to remember the shortcuts of. My (customized) toolbar contains highlighters, colors, and color picker, in addition to the Navigator, Comments and View icons. Very minimalistic, and easy to make it appear/disappear when needed.
