Importing NW Classic files with headers to NWP

Post by Alexander.mcclintock »

Help!
I seem to have a problem with importing classic files into NWP.

I have a large number of files in Nisus Writer Classic 6.5 running under OS 9.1 on a desktop Blueberry iMac. (My usual computer is a portable running NWP 1.3 under Leopard.) I have finally decided to replace my desktop and therefore need to translate my Nisus Writer Classic files to NWP 1.3. I have been finding this difficult because formatting does not seem to be translated accurately. In particular I am having problems with files formatted in columns with headers.

For example, I have a file of 130 sides in landscape layout formatted into columns which contains narrative data concerning observations on subjects at different times through repeated cycles. I have used the header facility in Nisus Writer Classic to create a column (spanning the whole of the page,) containing data which refers to all of the columns below it. The subsequent columns then read sequentially in time when read downwards and concern the same point of the cycle when read across. The header changes with each new subject. The result is a very effective conspectus of a large body of narrative data. The formatting is therefore crucial to the utility of the file.

When I attempt to import this file into NWP the file appears in portrait layout, all the header information has been lost and the columns while 'snaking' across each page, contain page throws in strange places. I have been unable to locate a translator program which will import from Classic 6.5 to NWP.

Please can anyone tell me how I get NWP to import files from Classic while retaining headers and column layout.

Yours faithfully

Hi Alexander,

It sounds like you might be using some kind of "running header" feature of Classic, that changes the header text based on the content of the page below. Nisus Writer Pro (NWP) does not have such a feature.

As to the other import issues (the paper orientation and header loss) please send us the original Classic file so we can have a look.

Thanks!

Hi Martin

Thank you for offering to look at a file for me.

I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. My ethics committee did not like the idea of sending files containing data to you so I have had to create a suitable file by substituting e's for text. The behaviour of the file is exactly the same as I described in my initial post.

I am however having trouble uploading the file. I have attempted to upload the file both from the iMac desktop and from the Powerbook desktop both in classic format and in self-extracting compressed format created using Stuffit. I have tried compressing the file on the iMac and on the Powerbook. In each case I get a message from this interface telling me that 'The extension is not allowed.'

Please can you tell me how I should send the file to you?

Thanks for your efforts Alexander- probably the easiest would be for you to email me the file directly at:
