WORD DOCS OPEN IN NISUS!

Word documents received as email attachments or that I have created by exporting a Pages document are trying (but failing) to open in Nisus format.
Any suggestions how I correct this? Many thanks.

Much as I love NWP, I have to say it still can't deal with Word docs (.docx - if you're having problems with .doc files you may have other issues) properly, esp. if there are tables or whatever.

Try opening from the File>open, otherwise send it off to http://www.zamzar.com/ and let them do it for you.

If these documents have the doc extension, select the icon of one such document in the finder and press Command-I to get the Info panel.
If you want this type of document to open with Word, select the application in the popup list of applications under ‘Open with:’.
Then press the ‘Change All...’ button.

Perhaps I misunderstood the OP: does "correct this" mean "get the documents to open in Nisus" or "get the documents to open in Word"?

I assumed (given the forum) the former - if the latter, can't help. Sorry.

I think Hamid has the right of it, that David has issues with Word documents being undesirably opened in NWP. This is something OSX controls, and as Hamid posted, you'll need to fiddle with the setting in the Finder.

One thing I'd like to clarify:

I believe you're saying that NWP handles Word's ".doc" files well, but not ".docx". If so, that's fair enough. Currently our ".docx" import is very limited. We use Apple's import features, so NWP may be enhanced automatically as OSX improves, but we're also investigating other possibilities.

But seriously, zamzar does a pretty good job with the .docx files.

But the bye product is that it doesn't open in NWP either!
But I will try fiddling in Finder as you suggest.

If you're on Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.x) you probably will have a hard time getting the exact results you want. As of Snow Leopard, OSX wants to open all ".doc" files with one application, all ".rtf" files with another, and so on. Essentially, OSX no longer cares which application created a file when deciding which application should open it.

I routinely open (simple) .doc and .docx files in NWP 2.0.2 on X.6.8.

If I have a problem, I use NeoOffice.

If your entire Mac freezes (eg: requires a hardware reboot) then there might be something wrong with your Mac. The operating system (OSX) should never freeze, even if there's a bug/problem with NWP.

When you change the "open with" area of the Info panel on a ".doc" file, are you making sure to click the "Change All" button? What version of OSX and NWP are you using?

They have been saved from pages documents into the Word format and put into Dropbox.

I wonder if there's a bad interaction with Dropbox here. What happens when you open a ".doc" file that is not managed by Dropbox? eg: try opening a saved ".doc" file from your Desktop.

I wonder if the problem is how Pages is saving the Word format.
