Inserting different headers

Post by fiona macvane »

Please Help. I am formatting my thesis and can't see how to use the headers. If I put in a header then that header appears on all pages. Obviously I want the header to reflect the section such as Title page, abstract, acknowledgements, index, chapter 1,2,3 etc. If I put in a section break at the end of a section it just puts a blank page as the next page but the headers still carry over (or carry back if I try to change them in the new section). Can someone please tell me how to do this???? I've done it before- I wrote another large document a few years ago using an earlier version of Nisus Writer Pro but just can't remember how.....

Hi,

unfortunately, Nisus Writer Pro does not have a feature similar to Word's style fields, which allow you to have the current section title (as defined by one of your heading styles) displayed automatically in each section. As a result, you have to create section breaks and insert the header manually. Your problem is that even though you create new sections, the header from the previous section is still carried over. To change that, place the text cursor anywhere inside the new section, then switch to the Sections Palette Group (the fourth palette group in the tooldrawer), and, under Header/Footer (sec xy), make sure the checkbox labelled "Different Headers" is ticked. Once that's been done, you can change the header for that section without changing the header in the previous section. Note that you will have to repeat this procedure for each section.

Thank you. Simple when you know how! Do I just click on section break to add a new section? I have my whole document in one file now. Will NWP allow me to put section breaks retrospectively or do I need to copy to a new file??

You can insert section breaks any time and anywhere in the process.

Thanks again. It's doing fine so ignore last question. I feel like I am really getting somewhere now.
