control over hyphenation

I take it there's no way to allow hyphenation but specify that hyphens shall not be used on consecutive lines?

That's correct, with hyphenation it's all or nothing I'm afraid. Even inserting "soft hyphen" characters manually won't work because the OSX text engine won't display those soft hyphens unless you turn on "allow hyphenation" for the whole document.
