Speech syntheses in foreign languages

How can I make Nisus Writer understand that a non English text should be read by a synthesizer voice suitable for the language of the text?
I had had hope for the obvious: that the text language will make a reasonable choice. This is not the case.
Next I tried to manually select a suitable voice in the system preferences. This works f.e. in TextEdit or Mail. But Nisus continues to use English, which for non English text produces useless output.

NWP just feeds the text to OSX to read aloud, but perhaps our customized language features are disrupting Apple's language detection somehow. I'll file it as a bug, thanks.
