Multi-page PDF in background for commenting?

Post by NisusUser »

My goal is to have a PDF file imported and shrunk in from the margins such that I can easily use NWP 1.4.2 make running comments on the PDF file's text. Then I want to print out the original PDF with my comments on one normal page. I was told that it's possible to put the PDF in the background somehow. How do I do that with a multi-page file? Ideally I would also like the ability to highlight text in the PDF, but I think that's asking a lot. I don't know of any PDF editing app that will do what I want, but I was told that inserting the PDF into NWP and then commenting in the space along the PDF (or making a table along the side and commenting there) would work.

Hello, NisusUser.

I think you need a pdf application with annotation capability. Preview can do that. Open a pdf file and select View>Show Annotation Bar. Skim also is a good choice, even better in my opinion.

Greetings, Henry.

Thank you, Henry. I'm afraid I didn't (don't) know exactly how to do what I want with Preview, but since you say it's possible, I'll check it out. Also, I contacted the good folks at PDFPen (http://www.smilesoftware.com), and they gave me this reply:
I am not sure of a way to provide the exact form you are looking for. However, you can do something alone those lines. What you can do is create Notes or Comments, or both, and have a similar outcome. If you put notes on the PDF, they will appear when you print them, if selected. If you add comments (the yellow box), it will created a running tally of the numbers, shrink the PDF down, and insert the referenced comments in the bottom of the sheet. Try adding a few comments/notes, and then do a PRINT, and in the dialog tell PDFpen to print the Comments and Notes.

If you add comments to your document using NWP version 2.x they will be saved in the generated PDF. If you open that PDF in Apple's Preview.app, or PDFPen, you will see those comments as little speech bubble icons:

Unfortunately the icons are rather chunky, and appear that way in any printout as well.
