Something like "format painter"?

Post by NisusUser »

Hi, does NWP 1.4 or 2.0 have something like Word's Format Painter function, whereby one can select a paragraph and copy its formatting to another paragraph? I just imported a WORD contract template that needs a lot of editing, and this feature would help a lot. I don't really want to go to the work of assigning Nisus paragraph styles to everything.

Thanks.

I'm using 1.4.2, but if version 2.0 had it, I might just jump for it :)

BTW, I did find this thread on Nisus Writer Express, in which users wanted this function for NWE, but I could find nothing on the forum for NWP and "format painter".

Nisus has the dropper. It should sit on the toolbar. If not, right-click and select Customize Toolbar…, locate the dropper and drag it anywhere on the toolbar.
Otherwise, you can use the following shortcuts:

Command-Option-C (to copy character attributes)
Command-Option-V (to paste character attributes)
Command-Control-C (to copy ruler attributes)
Command-Control-V (to paste ruler attributes)

Cheers, Henry.

Thank you very much, Henry! That's just what I wanted. I searched the Help PDF, but didn't know it was called "dropper" :)

Great news!

You could also use the menu View > Show Paragraph Formatting Icons. That feature shows little icons in the margin any time there is a change in paragraph style or ruler. You can drag-drop those icons to copy-paste the formatting they represent. I forget when we added this feature exactly, but it might be in Pro 1.4.x; definitely in version 2.x.

Thank you, Martin. That is a totally new feature to me. And, yes, it's working on 1.4.2.

Now that I've turned View > Show Paragraph Formatting Icons on, I noticed that some paragraphs have the yellow icon and some have that icon plus a pilcrow (paragraph) symbol. Why is that. See attached screenshot.

The blue pilcrow "P" icons show whenever there is a change in paragraph style, eg: Normal changes to Heading 1, Block Quote changes to Normal, etc.

On the other hand, the little yellow ruler icons show whenever there is a manual change in paragraph formatting, eg: change in the left indent, line spacing, etc. The little ruler icon only appears if these paragraph formatting changes are not enforced via a style. For example, applying the "Block Quote" paragraph style effectively changes the indents, but the little ruler icon will not show because those indents are not manually applied formatting that override the document styles.

Hopefully that makes some sense.
