Endnotes Displaying as Footnotes in other apps

Post by carpelatin »

I've just recently discovered Nisus Writer Pro and have fallen in love. But I have encountered one problem that is giving me serious pause before committing to buy NWP. I have a simple essay I'm working on in NWP, which has about 20 endnotes. They display fine as endnotes in NWP but always display as footnotes in other word processing application. As an RTF file I tried it in MS Word (Mac 2011, Mac 2004, and a PC version), OpenOffice, and Mellel. I also tried saving as a .doc and opening in the MS Word versions above. Do other people have this problem, and/or is there something I can do to get my endnotes to properly display as endnotes for those I need to send my work on to (who mainly have Word)?

Are you using the latest version (2.0.2) of Nisus Writer Pro? I remember we had a problem with this some time ago, but it should be fixed now. I just retested against Word for Mac and endnotes saved in RTF files from NWP open/place correctly in Word.

If you are using NWP 2.0.2 and still have trouble, could you please send us a sample document that shows the problem? Thanks.

Thanks for your response Martin. Yes, it is 2.0.2, and creating another document from scratch with some text I had lying around just now did not show the same problem. I've done as you suggested and emailed Nisus the problem document.

Thanks for the file. We've had a look and the problem is that your document is missing a "Footnote" note style; it only has an "Endnote" style (in the stylesheet view). Once the Footnotes style has been created, Word will properly place your notes. To quickly create a Footnotes style:

1. Insert an empty footnote. This creates a Footnotes style if needed.
2. Delete the inserted footnote (be sure not to use undo, as that will also delete the automatically created style).

After you take that step, and save your file, this particular document should never have the problem again.

Looking deeper into the matter, the heart of the problem is that Word is not respecting the "\enddoc" RTF control in this situation. This is something we should be able to work around, and I'll file it as an issue we need to address. Thanks again!
