Any suggestions on how to read or convert garbled text in a slew of documents showing ‘December 18, 2007’ as the date created and last modified and identified as being in ‘Rich Text Format (RTF)’? I have no idea where this date came from.

This is something that's quite difficult to diagnose without an example file. It could be an importer issue, but just as easily it could be a damaged file or unknown file format. Could you send us an example (privately if needed) to look at?
