Make bullet points, numbered lists, etc. responsive to…

Post by greenmorpher »

…the left margin of the text in which they are embedded.

This has been niggling away for some time. I know I can set it up as a style, but it would be great if I didn't have to do that.

What I am talking about is that I often use indented text and sometimes I want to have a few bullet points within that text. I would be great if could just click on the bullet points thing in the Lists palette and it would insert bullet points style which was modified automatically by the indent I am using rather than being tied to the left margin of the page.

Possible?

When NWP decides how to indent some text, there are several pieces of formatting/attributes it considers.

In a simple situation, where one has a piece of text with an applied paragraph style (let's consider "Normal") plus an applied list style (say "Bullet List"), the indents from the list style win. This shouldn't be a great surprise, because otherwise there would be no indents to help align the list items (Normal typically has zero indentation).

You can override this behavior in two ways:
1. Apply a custom ruler to your text, eg: select the text in question and move the indent markers on the ruler. This is manually applied formatting that overrides any applied styles (paragraph and list styles).
2. Have your paragraph style enforce both the list style and the desired indents, eg: create a "List Paragraph" paragraph style that has both the list style and custom indents applied to it. The indents added to the paragraph style definition will override the indents usually taken from the list style.

I'm attaching a file that shows these strategies. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Drat! I could see that coming! :o

Thanks, Martin, for taking the trouble to set up the example, I had worked both those out; I was just wondering whether I could get away with giving you guys some work and not doing a tiny bit myself.

A moment of gross laziness, I fear, please forgive.
