Make Number, only, bold - in Para. style based on num. List

Post by Tom R. »

Hi,

I've set up a paragraph style which includes, or is based on, a numbered list. The list numbers include text before the number, and I would like to define the style to make that text & the number bold but not the entire pargraph. Is there a way I can do that? I'm attaching a screen shot of what I'd like it to look like. (Specifically the "Requirement X" paragraphs.)

Thank you,

Tom

G’day, Tom et al

In very brief outline, one way to do this is to modify the “Number List” List Style in the Styles Library. Click on a given list level in Styles View and modify its format in the Lists palette. The trick here is to put “Requirement ” [that’s with a space] in the Before Text field and “.Option-tab” in the Separator field; select the contents of each of these fields and make them boldface. Note, though, that subsequent application of a paragraph style may have unintended consequences.

I think I would instead be inclined to define a character style for these “headings” and then at some stage do a PowerFind Pro search for them all and apply this character style to all such headings in one hit. It should be easy to find the heading “Requirement 20.3” (say), as distinct from a subsequent reference to that item, as the former occurs at the beginning of a paragraph and is followed by a period and a tab character.
