Header page numbers aligned on margin with centered header t

Post by doden »

Hello,

I am new here, so I hope that this query is clear. I am having a difficulty with the headers in a book I am publishing (technical writing). I looked in the forum and saw related queries, but not the precise issue I am having.

For longer documents, is there a preferred way (other than manually using the space bar) to place a page number on the outside margin of a header, while placing centered justified text (book title or section title) in the same header? This is the format of an alternating running header I need to incorporate, but I cannot seem to find a way to do this in NWP. I am able to set-up everything using the palette expect for the different justification needed for automatic page numbers and the text in the headers.

Many thanks for any reply,
Dan

I'd think I'd do it by putting a centre-tab point in the middle of the ruler for the header, then a right-tab point on the right margin. Then centre your main header text by putting a tab before it, followed by a tab then the page number.

If you're using left-right pages, set odd-and-even headers, for the left page, place the centre-tab marker, then just enter the page number and then tab and the header text.

If you haven't done it before, on the ruler, double click roughly where you want the centre-tab marker or the right-tab marker to go, and a dialog will open allowing you to choose the type of tab you want and to enter the exact point on the ruler (or you can simply drag the marker when you've entered it).

Someone else might have a better way of doing it.

HTH :)

G’day, Dan et al

Welcome to the Forum, Dan.

I see Mark has just beaten me to the reply. Same idea, but I’ve spelt it out a bit more, step-by-step fashion, so I’ll post it just in case it helps.

First of all, we (almost!) never use spaces for formatting. It is easy (and more elegant!) to achieve what you want by other means.

Position the cursor in the header area of the first page. Set Paragraph to Align Left. Start by hitting the Tab key, then type your header text, then another Tab, then Insert > Automatic Number > Page Number. Set a Center Tab in the horizontal ruler and adjust its position so that it is half-way between the left and right margins. Then position a Right Tab at the far right of the header, abutting against the right margin. If I understand you correctly, this is how you want things to look (but see Note below).

In the Section Palette, tick the checkbox for “Use Facing Pages”. In the Headers and Footers Palette, tick the checkbox for “Odd & Even Pages”.

Position the cursor in the header area of the next page. (You may need to insert some text in the non-header area, perhaps followed by a Page Break, in order to get to the next page.) Once again, you want Paragraph set to Align Left. This time, omit the opening Tab; go straight to Insert > Automatic Number > Page Number, then type your header text. In the horizontal ruler, you now only need to position a Center Tab as before.

Having set up your initial odd and even pages, things will take care of themselves automatically in the rest of your document.

Note: The formatting I have used assumes that your first page will have an odd number, that odd-numbered pages have the page number abutting against the right margin, and that even-numbered pages have the page number abutting against the left margin. You can alter the starting page number in the Section Palette.

I hope this does the trick for you.
