I got this message scanning a rtf document for bibliography with Bookend 13.4.2

The system error code you received (-1712) stands for "timeout". That means communication between Nisus Writer and Bookends reached some kind of internal system time limit. Or it may be that communication failed in some other way, and only then did the operation timeout.
The simplest potential solution is to restart both Nisus Writer and Bookends. Or better yet: shutdown and restart your entire Mac. Our apps rely upon the system (macOS) to handle communications. There could be a temporary system issue that is causing the problem.
