Problem with Nisus Thesaurus

Post by kmkohler »

After installing the final release of Nisus 1.1, the thesaurus no longer works for me (although it worked with the beta).
In preferences, the languages panel displays "Thesaurus unavailable."
I tried re-downloading the thesaurus and reinstalling it but that didn't help.
I'm running 10.5.2 on a Power Mac.

Any ideas? Anyone?

That is odd- one thing to make sure of is that Nisus Thesaurus is in your Applications folder. If it is not, NWP may not find it. Also, try launching Thesaurus manually from the Finder to make sure it is working.

I double checked both of your suggestions. The app is in the Application folder and it runs fine when double-clicked.

Something I haven't tried is deleting the Nisus Writer Pro preference file. Is that something that might help? I don't want to do it if I don't have to, since of course I'll lose all my preferences.

If I do that, I'll save a copy first since I assume someone might want to look at it.

In NWP Preferences=>Languages, when you click ‘English’ in the list of languages to the left, make sure that ‘Thesaurus’ pop up to the right has ‘English’ and not ‘Disabled’.
You can safely delete 'com.nisus.NisusThesaurus.plist' from the Preferences folder of your Home library. A fresh copy will be created when Thesaurus app is launched.

Deleting your NWP or Thesaurus preferences is unlikely to help, but you can always move them out of the folder and back in to try all the same.

Another suggestion:
1. Quit NWP if it is running.
2. Launch Thesaurus.
3. Launch NWP.

See if that allows NWP to detect the existence of the Thesaurus. If not, can you send in a feedback report using the menu Help > Send Feedback? The log that's gathered might contain a clue as to the problem.

I tried running Thesaurus than Nisus Writer without success.

I've sent a report as you suggested. Right at the beginning I see something about the thesaurus framework not being loaded. Sounds relevant to me.

From the feedback report kmkohler and I determined the problem was an old/stale copy of Nisus Thesaurus hanging around in the OSX "archive and install" folder. For some reason OSX was telling NWP this was the copy of Thesaurus to use, instead of the one in the Applications folder. Removing the old copy of Thesaurus fixed the problem.
