Document Could Not Be Opened

Post by mwiseman »

I keep getting this error with .doc files. Any ideas on how to fix. The error reads thusly:
There were problems reading the document 'anyname.doc' that prevented us from opening it. If you are willing to send this file to Nisus Software, we will look into fixing the problem for a future release.
The docs open fine in word. If I resave them as rtf or another format, they will open in Nisus.

Which version of Word/Windows were they produced under? There are some files produced by earlier versions of Office that won't open unless they are either opened in Word and saved out as RTF or run through something like MacLink Plus.

Here is a doc I cannot open.

http://potato-content.net/guests/guest_ ... s/Test.doc

This problem started about 2 weeks ago. The .doc files come from many sources, including my own desktop, which has Word 11.3.8 and 12.1.5. I tend to think its a Nisus problem. Is there a preferences file or something that might be corrupted?

I use Nisus because the marcos are easy for me to write and use for cleaning text from different sources. I really need to get this fixed.

Your Test.doc document opens fine for me using NWP 1.2 and Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Intel) - it contains just the word "Test" (Times New Roman, 12pt) right?

What version of NWP and Mac OS X are you using? Intel or PPC?

That's what I was going to ask- thanks dshan.

mwiseman: could you submit a feedback report using the menu Help > Send Feedback so we can see those machine details and possibly other helpful information? Thanks.

I have just sent the menu Help > Send Feedback communication as requested. NWP seems to be looking for a filter and not finding it. I have reinstalled NWP, but no change to the error.

That's correct. I'm running NWP 1.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.11 on a G5 Dual 1.8. I sourced this document in ms word on the same machine. It works fine in ms word, but it fails to open in NWP. I have re-installed NWP, but I get the same error. Attached is a png that shows the error. The error follows a status message that says it's looking for a filter.

Have you had a look at the logs using the Console utility when attempting to open this file? They might contain some additional info on what filter it's failing to load and why.

What log would you recommend I look in? I do not see an specific Nisus logs.

Now, here is another thought... are there any specific fonts that must be loaded for Nisus to work? I'm using Font Reserve Server and keep fonts to a bare minimum. Until the last update of NWP, there was a problem with text disappearing when it was in certain PC fonts. This is a longshot, but I thought I'd throw this in. Hopefully someone from Nisus will get in here. I has sent the files, error messages, etc. to them and referenced this thread.

I guess I could try uninstalling and reinstalling again. I recently tried deleting the preferences file, but no change in result.

Looks like Nisus has abandoned me on this one...

I tried opening files on my powerbook G4, which is running NWP 1.1 on OS X 10.4.11 and that works fine. I think my problems began when I installed NWP 1.2 on my G5 1.8 Dual running OS X 10.4.11.

It's kind of disappointing no one from Nisus has responded here or by email. I sent them files, logs, etc. No acknowledgment of any kind by a real person.

Look in the console log and the system log, open Console first then load Nisus and open your troublesome document, you should see messages from Nisus appear in the two logs and hopefully one or more of them will indicate what the problem is.

Fonts may well be your problem, is your PB using Font Reserve? If not then that's likely your problem. As the document uses Times New Roman that's the most obvious one to check, is that font available on your G5?

We actually replied to your "hotpotato" email account on March 23. The subject was [Re: I havenot been able to open ".doc" files for a few weeks]. Perhaps the email was lost in a filter of yours?

Unfortunately the logs collected from the feedback report did not yield any interesting information. I think it unlikely fonts are the problem, but it's always a possibility.

You said in your email that the problem has existed for a few weeks, which implies that previously you did not have any trouble. Is that the case, and if so, is there anything about your setup that's recently changed? Or did the NWP installation on your G5 always have trouble?

I'm pretty sure the problem began when I installed NWP 1.2. I don't use my laptop as often and usually in a hurry, so I've been dismissing the upgrade notifications on that machine, which continues to work.

Based on the error message, it seems to be looking for a filter that does not exist.

Is there a way to get a copy of NWP 1.1? I'll install that and see if the problem goes away.

Here is what I received on March 23 at 10:46 AM EDT:
Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your recent feedback to Nisus Software. We wanted to let you know that your feedback was received, but that we are not able to personally respond to each submission. However, your message will be read and if you have a support request or we need more information about your report, we will contact you.

Thanks again for your feedback and for using Nisus Writer Pro!

Sincerely,
-The Nisus Team
This automated message was not filtered, and I would guess an actual response would have come from the same email address. It sounds like you are saying another email was sent. If so, it's not on my server nor its logs.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

I just found a copy of the NWP 1.03 dmg on my backup system... I installed that and the "test" file opens fine. When I open in NWP 1.2 it fails.

I'm sure the problem is related to the installation of NWP 1.2 on my G5. I'm happy to provide any information you might need to run this down. I'll be on vacation from noon Tuesday for the balance of this week. I'll be back on April 6. I will have email access in the meantime but will be away from this G5.

Version 1.2 introduced an all new ".doc" file converter, so that's not unsurprising. It's actually somewhat good that it's behaving consistently bad on your system, and the failing wasn't caused by something you installed recently.

You can download older versions from our archives, but I don't think it's necessary for you to run that test in this case.

That's correct, we sent another non-automated reply from the same email address on the same day. I've forwarded you a copy of that email- not that it's useful anymore, but if you want to have a look to check your email server status. It could be a problem with our email host, who knows.

I agree about the problem being version 1.2. Thanks for your offer to help, we appreciate it. We'll be in touch.
