Nisus and MobileMe

Post by phspaelti »

As a MobileMe user I recently began using the sync "Preferences" setting. Little did I know that this would not only synch my Mac's system preferences, but also the preferences for applications. The result is that if I make changes to the "Nisus New File" on one machine the same changes will later show up on my other machines running Nisus as well. The same holds true for keyboard shortcuts etc. Overall a very nice feature! (Though I guess it's Apple that deserves the praise?)

There is however one problem. When I began using this, I had my Nisus preferences set to automatically backup a copy of files to a special folder. The problem is that NW apparently specifies the folder with a full pathname, so something like "/MyMac'sHD/Users/MyAccount/Nisus_Backups". Since my machines have different names, each time I would switch machines after a while Nisus would prompt me saying: "Can't backup because folder pathname/NIsus_Backups not found". The problem was that the pathname would be that of the other machine. I would change the pathname only to have the problem recur on the other machine, back and forth. I tried specifying a pathname "~/Nisus_Backups" making sure to put the backup folder in the same relative location on each machine, and although Nisus accepted the specification of the pathname, it just replaced it with an absolute pathname, and the problem kept recurring. This leaves me with the following options:
 1. Turn off synch preferences -- Talk about throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
 2. Putting the backup folder on my iDisk -- This is actually a very nice option since one in effect makes every file worked on available across all machines. The drawback is that unless one mirrors the iDisk locally it reallys slows down file saving.
 3. Turn off the save to backup folder prefernce of Nisus -- After trying 2 for I while, I ended up doing this.
However it would be nice if Nisus would allow a relative pathname for the backup folder. So consider that a feature request.

Thanks for describing this for us. Personally I'd consider it a bug and will file it as such.

As for the forum's list tag, it does work, but the syntax is a little awkward. For a bulleted list you should use:

Red

Green

Blue
And a numbered list:

Red

Green

Blue
I'll show the results of such code in my next reply..

So the "1" (or some other number) was the trick. Thanks, I got it to work now.
