Number and bullet list shading

Is there a way to turn off the grey shading associated with numbers and bullets? I can't find a preference toggle for this.

Under Preferences ... > Appearance, select Automatic Text in the left hand box then select List items in the right hand box. Check Hide this highlighting. The shading will then disappear. This is a global setting.
