Turn off shading of footnote references and page numbers

The manual says that the default of page number shading can be turned off in the Preferences...but I can't find where! Also, I'd like to change the shading -- or, better, change the shading color-- of footnote refs so they are easy to spot!

Yes indeed, all those highlighting colors can be changed in Nisus Writer's "Appearance" preferences pane. At the bottom you'll see a categorized list of all the colors you can change. Both page numbers ("Automatic numbers") and footnote references ("Note references") are under the "Automatic Text" category.
