Loss of styles when edited in MS Word

Post by Loz »

When I create a document in NWP with para styles applied, save it (not using "Export") as a .doc file, and open it in MS Word (Word:Mac 2011) the paras which had been formatted with styles retain the formatting, but no longer use styles. Instead they are formatted in Word using the individual attributes that the style had. This means that if the document is edited in Word, and then saved back as an rtf file and opened in NWP, the paras no longer have a style applied. Is this expected behaviour?

The particular problem arose because I had a document in NWP which had various styles applied to different levels of heading, which were linked with TOC styles so that they appeared in the table of contents. When the document was opened in Word by a co-worker, the table of contents appeared, but the para headings to which it referred were no longer formatted with a style, so when the TOC was updated, Word could not find any entries in order to rebuild the TOC.

That is definitely not the expected behavior. Would you be able to send us your document, so we can try and reproduce the problem? Thank you.

Of course, I cannot reproduce it myself now :? (though the time I spent reformatting the document to replace lost styles was very real!)

All I have done since then is restart Word, which may have reset something, I suppose. All of which reminds me why I don't use it anymore.

Thanks for your help.

No problem, I'm glad it turned out alright in the end, even if you did waste time reformatting. Hopefully it doesn't happen again!
