Text flickering

Yesterday, the text in my Nisus Writer Pro documents began flickering - usually when I scroll, always when I highlight something. The flickering sometimes involves only one paragraph, sometimes the whole visible page. It does it on both my machines (iMac and MacBook Air). The iMac running Mountain Lion, the Air running Mavericks.

This seems to occur only in large files (3+ MB). Scrolling has also become hinky in those files, though smooth in small files.

The problem occurs regardless of whether there are other programs open (i.e. it doesn't seem to be caused by inadequate memory - and in any case that hasn't changed since two days ago). Both machines have 8 GB memory.

I see from the forum that a similar flickering problem seems to have occurred in 2008, but was presumably fixed - and indeed I've never encountered this before a couple of days ago. I haven't installed any new software; I'm not aware of any updates being installed.

I think I found the answer - I had set the view to "Show Text Width". Once I changed to "Show Page Width", the flickering and scrolling issues have disappeared. Perhaps the tech gurus can explain what the underlying cause was.
