PDF Export

You may want to save your document as a Portable Document Format.

1. Choose the menu command: File > Export As PDF….

2. Name the file and navigate to the location in which you want to save it.

3. Click Save in the Save As dialog.

Any hyperlinks you added to the document, both to the Web and internally (as cross-references and index entries) are preserved when you print your file as a PDF and the link is “clickable” in the resulting PDF document.

Any document properties as explained in “Document properties” on page 409, are preserved in the saved PDF files.

You can print any annotations (comments or tracked changes) associated with the document in a PDF. Note, however, that the comments and/or tracked changes of all authors appear in the printed version, whether or not they are displayed on screen. Printing comments is explained on page 513 while printing tracked changes is explained on page 534.

Modify the appearance of linked text in PDF files

When you export a Nisus Writer Pro as a PDF, Nisus Writer Pro adds certain special character styles that only show in the generated PDF. These are:

PDF Link - Cross-Reference
Any text that is part of a cross-reference will display in this style (bookmarked text, page number, line number, etc.).

You can choose to not have your cross-references hyperlink in the exported PDF file, as explained the section “Hyperlink to target when saved as PDF”. In that case, the style is not created.

PDF Link - Index
Only the index’s page number appears in this style.

PDF Link - TOC.
Only the table of content’s page number appears in this style.

You can choose to not have your page numbers displayed in the exported PDF file, if you turn off (uncheck) the option Include page numbers in the Configure TOC Styles… sheet, in which case this style is not created.

If you want to modify how these styles appear in the PDF you need to:

1. Choose the menu command: File > Export As PDF….

2. Save the PDF file.

3. Choose the menu command: View > Style Sheet.

4. Select the PDF Link style you want to modify in the sidebar.

5. Make the changes you want using the commands of the Format menu or the Character palette.

6. Save the file and choose the menu command: File > Export As PDF… once again.

You can choose to not have your cross-references hyperlink in the exported PDF file, as explained in the section “Hyperlink to target when saved as PDF”.

Page numbers in the generated table of contents and index are always linked in PDF files. The only option is to not include page numbers in the generated TOC/index, in which case the PDF styles won’t be used.

Any table of contents entries you created will appear and function correctly in the Contents sidebar in Apple’s Preview.app and in Adobe Acrobat Reader. The entire table of contents entry is clickable in the PDF.
